I received a note from my mother following the MDSI Hall of Fame dinner in February. It was a fun and special night at the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta. My mother, my brother Bill and his younger son Myles, along with my daughters had surprised me when I got the 2008 Award of Distinction from HIDA (recently renamed in memory of John Sasen).
This time I knew they were coming, as was my wife and her daughter too. I also worked on my speech more than I had in the past. It is said that public speaking is the number one fear of many people. It isn’t one of mine.
When I received the Leonard Burke award from HMMC, in 2011 , I didn’t have any family members present. But for the MDSI Hall of Fame I had a big crowd of family since two of my wife’s sisters and their significant others as well as one niece joined in for the big night along with the previously mentioned attendees. I view this industry as family and I had many close friends with me for my night. I was particularly touched that Scott and Linda Fanning went to the trouble to come and spend their time with me.
Naturally, I introduced my mother to many in attendance. They in turn said many nice things to her about what a great job she had done with me. My father would have been quite pleased with the evening too, but unfortunately he passed away twenty three years ago. Dad and I were very close. We worked together, played tennis together, and I knew that I was blessed to have the two of them. So, at any rate, I received this note from my mother which ends, “Good For Me!” A classic closing!!
It should be noted that I used points from Delta and Southwest to get everyone to Atlanta for the big event. The special group rate at the Ritz saved me a bundle, as I needed rooms for my girls as well as a room for my mother. What a good deal that was!
