Developed by Bovie Medical Corporation, the J-Plasma® surgical device represents the next generation of laparoscopic surgical devices; using cold plasma for cutting and coagulation instead of heat and electrical current (electrosurgery) or a laser. The ionized gas beam can be used in tandem with a retractable scalpel and provides surgeons a greater degree of precision for minimally invasive procedures.

The recent FDA approval of J-plasma with cutting blade will, in all expectations, benefit surgeons in multiple ways. Currently, the surgeon will typically use multiple instruments to achieve their desired results. For example, the surgeon may use an instrument called a mono-polar grasper to coagulate, a scissor to cut and a probe to dissect tissue. The J-plasma with cutting blade can effectively do all three with only one device. When the surgeon reduces the time required to change instruments, he reduces the time necessary for the patient to be on the table. This, of course, will also reduce the costs involved in performing the operation.
