The revolutionary J-Plasma tool allows surgeons to operate in delicate areas of the body. With an enhanced cutting capability, surgeons can do more while lessening damage to surrounding tissue, according to a May 2015 article in Medgadget.com, an independent publication for and by MDs and biomed engineers. The J-Plasma device is being used for a variety of gynecological procedures, including treatment of endometriosis. Specifically, they state that, “J-Plasma . . . works at far lower temperatures than traditional CO2 lasers, resulting in less damage to surrounding tissue. Surgeons treating women with endometriosis, for example, can now remove diseased tissue on the fallopian tubes without fear of damaging these delicate structures.” This can improve the likelihood of more effective treatment, potentially reducing the need for repeat procedures and retain the patient's ability to conceive and bare children.
The J-Plasma instrument passes helium over a distinctively designed energized blade, ionizing the gas into a plasma stream. This cooler plasma stream can ablate and cut tissue at cooler temperatures than traditional CO2 lasers or traditional electrosurgical units (ESUs).
The safety and effectiveness of J-Plasma for the treatment of endometriosis continues to be studied, but the level of safety of initial procedures and positive results are promising. One of the most recent publications by the Society of Laparoscopic Surgeons was in August, 2015, titled Greater Surgical Precision Scores a Triple Win. A 19-year-old patient, who had undergone countless treatments and been told that pregnancy might not be a possibility, was considering hysterectomy.
". . . That’s when she came across Dr. Ali Parsa, a gynecologist at Mark Twain Medical Center. He operated on her using a specialized tool, called J-Plasma. This tool produces a cool stream of plasma for high-precision cutting and coagulation. Importantly, this significantly reduces the risk of damage to delicate structures such as Fallopian tubes when lesions are removed. Made by Bovie Medical, J-Plasma is 510(k) approved and configured in a range of needle and blade lengths for optimal access during procedures."
Jessica is now the mother of a baby boy. She was able to resume her competitive sports career following the J-Plasma surgery and is pain-free.
In the white paper by Craig E. McCoy, DO, FACOG, FPMRS, Novel Surgical Approach Targeting Chronic Pelvic Pain with J-Plasma®, the reported benefits of using J-Plasma for endometriosis include:
- Better visualization for the surgeon (less smoke and char)
- Effective across multiple tissue types
- Fewer complications
- Less post-operative pain
- Less procedure time
- Minimized lateral and depth of thermal spread
- Reduced healing time
- Reduced risk to nearby vital structures
