It will be fourteen ago years, this February, that I had my most enjoyable and most memorable learning experience. The class was titled, “Seeing is Believing”, and taught by Scott Fanning and Jim Niekamp. Scott was the genius behind the marketing at Midmark Corporation. Under his guidance, the company gained 95% market share on a few different product offerings. Some with unbelievable speed and against formable competitors.
My learning experience began at the Ritz Carlton in Chicago, and there was a reason I was staying there. In fact, there is a reason for everything. What followed was a day and a half field trip around Chicago, where on each stop I saw something and with it heard a message that I will never forget. I remember each stop and what the message was from 14 years ago. I also remember that when I threw the drapes open the first morning to look outside, the snow was going sideways. A Florida boy doesn’t know that snow can go sideways, let alone for 24 hours.
How many classes have you taken where 14 days later let alone 14 years, you barely remember anything at all about what you "learned?" On several occasions, the places you go and the things you see aren’t available to the general public. I remember every stop we made that very brisk day in February. Some of the stops Mayor Daley probably hasn’t seen. The premise of the class was to Own the Relationship, and to get ALL of your customers' business for a lifetime. They also taught us why the best story always wins!
I can’t tell you about where you may go on your field trip, because that is part of the fun and the learning experience. I will tell you that since that day we have used this amazing company, 95 Share Marketing, repeatedly, and continue to send employees to the class to learn as I learned. There is no way I can do as good a job teaching them, and it helps them understand why we do the things we do.
