A Deeper Look At JPLASMA vs LASER -BOVIEFor over 80 years, the Bovie name has stood for innovation and a commitment to improving the quality of medical technology and patient care.  Traditionally known as manufacturers of electrosurgical generators, devices and associated products, today, we’re calling attention to the considerable benefits and advantages of our J-PLASMA™ technology over traditional laser surgical procedures.

While both technologies rely on the proper application of energy, J-PLASMA™ technology utilizes streams of ionized helium gas, while lasing is based on light amplification in focused beams.  Lasers also rely on wavelength color temperature and precise distance control to perform effectively.  These key points provide reasonable causes for concern as the effectiveness of laser light colors varies on certain tissue types, be it scar, connective or vascular tissue.

J-PLASMA™ is a “color-blind” technology for all tissue types and without having its effectiveness varying over changes in distance or orientation.  Also, J-PLASMA™ streams are constrained to a limit of 15mm, eliminating the “burn through” risk,  posed by some lasers, which can damage underlying healthy tissue.

And while both systems function over a wide range of settings, from mild use in skin resurfacing, to intense and highly energetic procedures for the removal of disease tissues, J-PLASMA™ offers many safety and cost-savings benefits that surgical lasers can never provide.

Lasers are more expensive to operate and maintain, requiring intensive labor, frequent recalibration and extreme safeguards and precautions as many lasers are dangerous to inadvertent view, should not be looked at directly, and are a known hazard when bouncing from reflective metal surfaces in hospital operating rooms.  Consequently, protective eyewear must always be on hand.  J-PLASMA™ requires none of these safety restrictions.

J-PLASMA™ provides the benefits of lasers, without the hazards or restrictions, at a fraction of lasing costs.  J-Plasma is formed using an inert gas, such as helium, passing over our uniquely designed blade, energizing the gas into a streaming plasma.  The energy provided is similar to that used to power Bovie’s electrosurgical generators and yet is totally unique to itself.

A key advantage that J-PLASMA™ offers is that it has two separate and independent control variables for setting the plasma’s stream and range of effect.  Clinicians can control the amount of energy fueling the stream for heating, and can also control gas flow for cooling effects.  This gas flow is helpful in pushing fluids, exposing underlying tissues for therapeutic treatment and is also used for the removal of debris.

Our proprietary blade design offers multiple incising options in a single tool.  Extending the surgical blade allows for use with or without plasma.  Without plasma allows for basic scalpel incisions, but combined with the J-Plasma stream, an extended blade provides enhanced cutting with minimal impact on surrounding tissues.  Retracted, the device can be used to form the J-Plasma stream for coagulation or blunt dissections.
