The article by Joe Queenan entitled, My 6,128 Favorite Books, got me thinking about what my favorite books are. For the most part, I read history and biographies. I read an occasional novel, which I always enjoy, but just don’t read them very often. Kind of like television; I don’t watch regular TV very often. While I enjoy watching TV, time being precious leads me to spend my time on other past times, like reading.
While I read less than Mr. Queenan, every book I read is not my favorite. In fact one of my favorite history authors is Stephen Ambrose. He wrote three from my favorites list, but if I had read “Nothing Like it in the World” first, then I may never had read another one of his books. This story is about the building of the transcontinental railroad and is described one railroad tie at a time. Starting on both sides of America and painfully ending somewhere near the middle. This book would go on my worst books I have ever read list.
I am also reminded of a book called "The Death of Common Sense,” that I happily didn’t finish because I accidentally left in the seatback pocket on one of my many flights. It was a depressing book describing story after story about the hoops people must jump through dreamed up by lawyers, laws and unions. I lost it, and I am glad I did.
The following list is My 21 Favorite Books:
Note: My top 21 are written in no particular order, although I could probably pick my absolute top five if forced to.
